Companies have largely failed to develop SAP talent in-house, and a shortage of skilled SAP workers on the open market is forcing I.T. departments to pay premiums to get those few that are available, according to David Foote, CEO and chief research officer of Foote Partners. It’s not uncommon for SAP jobs to stay unfilled for nine months, he says.

David Mitchell, an analyst at London-based Ovum who follows the business software market, said SAP’s results highlight the consolidation going on in the industry, from giants like Oracle to smaller companies. “It is intensified competition that has had an impact on SAP, in our view, rather than any fundamental flaws in the product or services portfolio,” he said.

The hybrid approach allows companies to have more flexibility, said Forrester analyst Liz Herbert. “Many enterprises don’t like having to choose one deployment over another, because there really is strength in mixing them,” she said.
